Feng Shui The Art of Harmony and Balance
Feng Shui is an ancient Chinese tradition, which involves establishing and ensuring a balance in people's lives. Feng means "wind" and Shui means "water" (pronounced fung-shway) and the two words combined represent harmony and balance.
In Chinese culture, gentle wind and smooth water have always been associated with a good harvest and good health, while harsh winds and stagnant water have been linked to famine and disease. Therefore, "good" Feng Shui has come to mean good livelihood and fortune, and "bad" Feng Shui has come to mean hardship and misfortune.
Feng Shui is not a superstition or a set of dos and don'ts. It is in fact the art and science of understanding the forces of nature, in order to design houses and workplaces in such a way that they will blend rather than clash with the environment. Thus, by planning the physical environment in which people live and work according to the negative and positive energies, it aims to promote the flow of positive energy and neutralize or avoid negative or destructive energy. Creating one's environment according to the principles of Feng Shui, will provide the balance necessary to achieve a life of harmony and happiness.
Similar to traditional Chinese medicine, Feng-Shui too has a rich and subtle tradition, with a standardized body of knowledge that takes years of formal training to master. Since the 90's Feng Shui has become firmly planted in western culture and has made a significant impact on the various disciplines which relate to the physical environment, i.e. architecture, interior decorating and even the design of personal items such as jewelry. It has influenced the lifestyle of people who adhere to it and has impacted on the way they manage their professional, financial and personal life.
The introduction of Feng Shui tradition into western lifestyle has inevitably created a mass of literature and many sources of information which deal with its practical implementation in all walks of life, including numerous training programs offered for professionals and laymen alike.
